Cases and Testimonials

Bill and "Toby"
Bill is a man who was going through a divorce and fighting addiction. He had raised Toby from a puppy, and felt Toby was all he had left in the world that mattered. Bill needed to go to a rehabilitation center to regain his sobriety, but Toby could not go with him. Catholic Family Services told Bill about the Foundation. Toby was able to stay with us as Bill recovered. Bill said there were times during his rehabilitation that Toby was the only reason he could go on. Knowing Toby was waiting patiently for his return gave him the strength to regain his sobriety. Toby and Bill have been reunited and are giving each other a second chance at happiness. Hear a recent audio file testimony about a dog named Toby, and how the foundation helped.

Martin and Sadie
Martin is a young man who works on a farm raising cattle along with his year-old German Shepherd companion named Sadie. Sadie is an impressive, athletic canine specimen and a good friend to Martin. Martin’s friendship with Sadie is among the most important relationships in his life. Recently Sadie was injured by a large piece of farm equipment and her right front arm was fractured completely. Martin had no credit and did not have the money for the Orthopedic surgery necessary to repair Sadie’s arm. Martin received a 50% grant from our foundation. Under the terms of the grant, Martin paid for half of Sadie’s medical care and the Foundation paid the remaining half. Sadie now has a bone plate holding her radius and ulna in alignment until the fracture heals. She is expected to make a full recovery and spend the rest of her days running, playing and exploring on the farm, with Martin close behind.

Roxanne Hill and "Lady"
Roxanne is a 45-year-old wife and mother who was diagnosed with uterine and ovarian cancer in March of this year. Her local doctors gave her a very poor prognosis and few treatment options. Roxanne chose to seek treatment at a cancer treatment center in Texas. As the treatment is expected to last for months, part of the family decided to temporarily relocate to Texas. Two of the children in the family stayed behind to finish high school and attend college. The family owns a two-year-old Calico cat named Lady.

Lady came to the family as a stray kitten, and has been an important family member ever since. Lady could not make the trip to Texas, as the family was unsure of their accommodations. Lady stayed at home with the two high school students and their Grandmother. Since then, one of the students has graduated and is no longer living at home. The other student stays with friends and only comes home on weekends. The Grandmother has been taking care of Lady, but is fearful of driving in poor winter conditions. Dr. Wesely informed the family of the Foundation and its ability to provide Lady safe accommodations through the winter. The Hill Family was very thankful to know Lady is safe and well cared for in their absence. They look foreword to a happy reunion.

Irene and Enu
Irene is a 55-year-old woman who has endured numerous health problems including stroke and cancer. These problems have left her disabled and wheelchair bound. She has five children who all live out of state, too far away to provide the kind of daily companionship she gets from Enu, a two-year-old Chihuahua mix dog.

Irene and Enu were living in an apartment with the help of a daily in-house care person when Irene’s health deteriorated, forcing her to seek rehabilitation at a nursing home. There, she underwent physical therapy with the hope of regaining her independence. The nursing home could not accommodate Enu as a guest, and she did not want to give up her friend. Her children were too far away to take Enu. Irene’s parents were too elderly and physically limited to take Enu. Irene asked her caretaker for assistance with this problem. Her caretaker contacted us and we informed her of the existence of the Lucille Burch Foundation. Through this foundation, Renee has not only been able to keep Enu, but Enu visited Irene in the nursing home several times during her time of rehabilitation. Irene said that Enu provided her inspiration to work hard, get better, and get back to her own apartment so she could be reunited with her friend. After several months, now Enu and Irene are back in their apartment together again.

Mona and "Freckles"
Mona, a 50-year-old woman who is estranged from her husband and children, depended on Freckles, a two year old Australian Shepherd for love and companionship. Mona lived in fear of her husband and was compelled to enter a shelter for battered women. While she stayed at the shelter, Freckles was cared for by dog-foster families. After several weeks, the dog foster family was no longer able to keep Freckles, but Mona was thankfully completing her stay in the shelter.

She was getting her life back together and was poised to be reunited with Freckles but could not find an apartment that would allows dogs. Mona was referred to us. The Foundation saw that Freckles was kept safe and happy while Mona searched for an apartment. During this time Mona required back surgery and again had no place for Freckles to stay. Freckles stayed with us as while Mona recuperated. When Mona was well enough, she and Freckles were reunited.

Sarah North and "Cara"
Sarah was fleeing from an abusive relationship, and sought shelter at the Center for Survivors. Cara, a five-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier, could not stay at the shelter with Sarah. Cara was extremely important to Sarah as her friend and companion. Sarah also feared for Cara’s safety if she left Cara behind. Sarah was referred to the Foundation by the Center for Survivors, and we were able to provide shelter to Cara until Sarah was able to travel to a Safe House elsewhere.
